I am walking on soft grass. The landscape is almost flat, with a few hills here and there, and all is covered with this beautiful green grass. No path, no houses, no signs of civilization at all. Nothing but soft, green grass under my bare feet.
I keep walking until a tree appears in front of me. An old apple tree. I climb on one of the branches and pick one of the red and yellow apples, bite into it, and what seems to be the most delicious piece of fruit I have ever tasted, is shortly followed by a moment of frustration, when I see a worm coming out of the apple. I feel angry. What is this worm doing in MY apple, especially since it's the best apple I have ever had?! The worm looks at me and seems utterly confused, like he's asking me why I have broken into his home.
That's when I hear her voice. First, I thought it's the spirit of the tree talking to me, but the voice came from deeper, from the Earth herself:
"What is territory? A piece of land you reclaim for yourself? Why? Because there is green grass and you see apples and you decide this is where you wanna be? What about all the beings who have been living here before you came along?
What about the air you are breathing here - is it yours? Is it part of your territory, or is it only the land itself? What about the rivers - is every drop that ever runs through them yours? Or just for the time passing by your territory?
What about you? Are you part of a territory that belongs to someone else? Who is living on you? Who is living off you? Who owns you? Who plants seeds in you? Who takes your resources? Whose property are you? Whose property is the Earth?
You are all my children. But I am not your territory. I am not your property. I cannot be divided and split and sold and traded.
You are my children. And I am the child of something bigger, something more ancient.
So what is territory? It's a story. An illusion some might say. You are all my children. You. The tree you are sitting on. The apple you're eating. The worm that was feasting on it before you came. You are all my children. And no one is more or less important. No one has more or less power.
You don't own this apple.
You don't own this tree.
You do not own this land.
You do not own me.
Because no one owns anyone or anything. Everthing just is. So be, my sweet children.
Stop claiming.
Stop hoarding.
Stop protecting.
Stop assaulting.
Just be. Be the beautiful, necessary, important piece of the greater whole.
Not more. Not less. Not better. Not worse.
Equally precious to me. Equally important. Equally loved. Equally free.
So be, my children, be."
